The repatriation of a deceased individual within Europe is typically carried out to neighboring countries of Germany, primarily by hearse, but it can also be conducted by air travel.
The deceased is usually taken directly to the local funeral parlour or cemetery by hearse. If the deceased is transported by plane, all EU capital city airports and many other major city airports in individual countries can be flown to with a deceased person. The applicable import regulations of the country in which the deceased is finally buried must always be observed. It may be necessary for the deceased person to be embalmed (preserved). Every transfer must take place in an airtight and leak-proof coffin or similar container, unless the deceased has been cremated.
There must always be a medical certificate confirming that the deceased was not infected with any infectious diseases that would make it impossible to import the body into the country where the deceased is to be buried. In addition, further documents may be required to authorise transport by hearse outside Germany. We can advise you on consular matters and help you to obtain all the necessary documents.
