Burials in Germany
Burial in the ground is the traditional type of burial in Germany.
This generally takes place in a wooden coffin. Exceptions, e.g. for religious reasons, are possible in designated cemeteries. The resting period in Germany is generally 20 years. There are numerous options for choosing a grave. The grave must be maintained by the next of kin. However, depending on the cemetery, there are gravesites that do not have to be maintained by the next of kin.
If the funeral is held in Germany, it is generally possible to hold a funeral service with a secular or spiritual ceremony. A burial without a funeral service is also possible. Eligible surviving dependants may be able to have the costs of the funeral covered by the relevant social welfare office or immigration authority.
