In Germany, cremation is considered an alternative and usually the more favourable type of burial.
Cremation generally takes place in a coffin. With a few exceptions, almost all religions and beliefs accept cremation. The resting period in a German cemetery is generally 20 years. There are numerous options for choosing a grave. The grave must be tended by the relatives. However, depending on the cemetery, there are many gravesites that do not have to be maintained by the next of kin. If the funeral is held in Germany, it is generally possible to hold a funeral service with a secular or spiritual ceremony. A burial without a funeral service is also possible.
Eligible surviving dependants may be able to have the costs of the funeral covered by the relevant social welfare office or immigration authority.
